The Art of Tezhip: A Classical Illumination Course
Term-Based Course | Fortnightly Sessions
I’m pleased to open registration for a new term-based courses in the traditional art of Tezhip.
About tezhip
Tezhip is the traditional art of illumination, or gilding (golden-ing) where delicate patterns, flowing floral forms, and gold come together to create richly decorative works inspired by centuries of Ottoman, Persian, and Islamic artistic traditions. Using methods and techniques that have been practised and passed down for centuries, Tezhip was historically used to adorn manuscripts and calligraphy with intricate detail and refined ornament.
Both meditative and expressive, the art invites a slower, more mindful approach to making — combining precision, creativity, and rhythm through carefully layered colour, pattern, and gold.
About the programme
Courses are offered from beginner through to advanced levels. This is the beginner course, more advanced courses are available on the workshop page on the website.
The courses follow a structured and progressive course of study. Students are guided from foundational techniques through to more advanced compositional work, developing their skills gradually through focused and disciplined practice across three terms.
Sessions will take place fortnightly in a small group setting, allowing for close guidance and individual feedback.
For beginners, no prior experience is required.
For intermediate or advanced, students will need to have completed previous courses or already have suitable skills. For these courses, please see the workshop page on the website.
